quest for the perfect lounge chair

I'm not one to have uncomfortable furniture in my house just because it looks nice. We recently (finally) got our sectional, the Tavern model from EQ3. Despite a lengthy wait and the run-around that we had to deal with from the company, it is an awesome sofa and I have no regrets. Then began the quest for the ultimate, stylish and extremely comfortable lounge chair for the living room. At least those are my criteria, my boyfriend added one: To be able to comfortably play guitar while sitting in it (i.e. no restrictive armchairs).

I recently got an original George Nelson for Herman Miller Coconut Chair. It was my grandfather's, who had a real love affair with mid-century modern design. At least I know where my expensive tastes come from...

The chair is currently upholstered in its original reddish-orange fabric, and having been in my family since mid-century, it is overdue for a bit of re-vamp. The fabric is in rough condition to say the least, so I plan to have it re-upholstered in a nice, heavy charcoal grey fabric, the ultimate dark neutral. Our sectional is upholstered in the Nolan Sandstone fabric from EQ3, which has a nice, natural linen sort of look, so I think the charcoal will be a perfect complement to that.

Here is the Coconut Chair in its original upholstery (minus the actual wear and tear of fifty or so years of use...).

I absolutely love it, and I can't wait to be lounging on it in my living room! It's really the perfect solution for us, and it satisfies my constant craving for mid-century modern design in our home. The best part for me really is that it came from my grandfather, and I will see it every day and be reminded of him.

While I'm on the subject of chairs that I love... I can't wait till I can buy one of these for myself. I don't care how many times it's been done, to me it's one of the ultimate classics and I love it. I mean, just look at that sleek frame, those sexy legs, and the beautiful tufted leather... it's really perfect. (Also with no arms, you'll notice!)

Barcelona Chair:

I'm also dying to put one of these in our office (read: my den). Just waiting for someone to show up at my door and hand one to me for free... it's only a matter of time.

Barcelona Daybed:

Having said that, my yearning for the Barcelona daybed suddenly has some real competition... ever since my Dad sent me a picture of this beauty from Calvin Klein last year:

LOVE! I went to see it in person at De Boer's - the natural linen fabrics and feather upholstery are so inviting, combined with the clean modern lines and that one perfect round bolster... I think I could look at this design for days and not get tired of it. Definitely another contender. Ah, so many options... so little money!

While I was at the store I spotted this handsome guy, also from Calvin Klein Home:
On a more affordable note, I also like the belle leisure chair from Nood (New Objects of Desire). I've been trying to open my mind to patterned upholstery (patterns are definitely an area in which I'm creatively stunted) and I was happy to discover this one that I love. (I am really into poppies right now.)

Unfortunately for me, that was promptly followed by the discovery that this particular chair has been discontinued. And so the search continues...

  1. LOVE those daybeds. Leave it to Calvin Klein to come up with really clean/simple designs that still somehow look really unique.
